Hurricane Dorian Preparedness 2019: What to do before the storm

Aug 30, 2019

Floridians are encouraged to have a disaster supply kit ready to go during hurricane season with the following items:

  • Water (at least a gallon a day per person, for 3 to 7 days)
  • Food (enough for at least 3 to 7 days)
    • Non-perishable foods and juices
    • Foods for infants and the elderly
    • Snack foods
    • Non-electric can opener
    • Cooking tools and fuel
    • Paper plates and plastic utensils
  • Blankets and pillows
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Clothing (Including rain gear and sturdy shoes)
  • First Aid Kit, medicines and prescriptions
  • Toiletries and hygiene items
  • Special care items (for babies or the elderly)
  • Moisture wipes
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Radio (Battery operated and NOAA weather radio)
  • Cash (Banks and ATMs may not be open or available)
  • Keys
  • Toys, books and games
  • Important documents (Keep in a waterproof container)
    • Insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, social security cards, etc.
  • Tool set
  • Maps
  • Emergency kit
  • Pet care items
    • Proper identification and immunization records
    • Ample supply of food and water
    • Carrier or cage
    • Medication
    • Muzzle and leash

What to do as the storm approaches:

  • Stay inside
  • Protect windows and doors as the storm approaches with shutters or plywood
  • Keep local radio or TV stations on for new information
  • Download the Red Cross emergency app
  • Store all lawn furniture, trash cans, toys, plants and gardening tools inside to prevent them from getting blown away
  • Fill plastic bottles with drinking water
  • Fill bathtubs with water
  • Fill your car’s gas tank
  • Unplug all small devices and turn off propane tanks
  • Buy a fire extinguisher (if you don’t have one already)
  • Have a to-go pack and learn evacuation routes in your area
  • Get an insurance check up: check in with your insurance agent well before hurricane season. Remember that flood insurance must be obtained separately. Prepare your home and vehicles according to your policy, and know where your insurance documents are located – take them with you if you evacuate.
  • Have photo documentation of valuables.
